Sight Test

We tailor the sight test to meet the individual needs of our patients, not all tests are suitable for all patients. This is also available to eligible patients on the NHS. From, basic eye sight test you can expect:

History & symptoms

Detailed history will be taken to enable specific areas to be concentrated on, this will include your medical history, current medications (please bring a copy of your prescription with you), previous ophthalmic history, your family ophthalmic history as well as any hobbies, sports and jobs you might do.

Refraction
Assessment of your vision with and without any glasses you may already have. Then an accurate assessment of your current spectacle prescription taking into consideration any specific problems you may be having.

Binocular vision assessment
To ensure your eyes work well as a pair. Minor binocular vision problems can lead to eyestrain and headache, more serious imbalances can reveal more sinister neurological problems.

Assessment of pupil reactions
Abnormal pupil reactions always warrants further investigation

Examination of external and internal aspects of your eyes
The most important aspect of your eye sight test. This can be achieved with a handheld instrument call an ophthalmoscope but more often than not we tend to use an illuminated microscope called a slit lamp that enables a three dimensional view of the eye thus enabling more subtle changes to be seen.

Measurement of intraocular pressure
Variation of the pressure inside your eyes can often be the cause of problems such as glaucoma or be the result of other problems such as uveitis or retinal detachment. We only use Goldmann tonometers for accuracy so there will be no puff of air to worry about.

Additional tests might include:
Colour vision
Stereopsis
Perimetry (visual field testing).

We also offer a home visit service for a basic sight test.  This can be provided on the NHS if eligible.
